About Local 5
|
Bricklayers and Masons Local Union No. 5 is one
of the oldest Bricklayer’s Unions in the country, being organized on March
30, 1867. In January 1881 it
was chartered under Bricklayer & Mason’s International Union of
America. On
August 9, 1919 the corner stone was set for building of the Bricklayer’s
Union Hall. It was the first
Labor Hall built in Cleveland.
Through city expansion progress, it was taken over by
Cleveland. Then in 1987 it
was demolished to build the Cleveland State Convocation Center. At that time we took the purchase
price and bought the building we are now currently
in. |

| Before
the demolition began, the corner stone was removed and a copper time
capsule was found. Among the
union related items found was the following letter still preserved. |

| From
the day the corner stone was set, our membership grew with the demand for
tradesmen to help with construction preceding World War II, and the Korean
War. By early 1960 our
membership was at 2,800 members.
The recession of the 70’s & 80’s took their toll on our
membership. But as in years
past, we persevered.
Currently our membership is at 1655 masons. |
