The Members and Officers of Local 5 would like to extend its condolences to the families and friends of Brother Harold Mohle, Brother John Paton, Brother Walter Friebel, and Brother Francis “Bud” Jones, all of whom passed away recently. Director Emeritus Jones retired as Director of the Northern Ohio Administrative District Council in September 2001 handing the reigns over to then Local 5 Field Represenative and Assistant Council Director Bob Fozio. “Bud” as he was called began his career as an apprentice bricklayer in Cleveland in 1947. Over the years he served at various posts including Business Manager for the Cleveland based Local 5. Jones was instrumental in restructuring the Local Unions of Northern Ohio into a powerful confederation that has maintained and expanded its market share in the face of competition from within and outside the masonry industry. He is also credited with bringing the District Council on board with IMI (International Masonry Institute). Bud also served as Financial Recording Secretary for the Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council.
Local 5 extends its deepest sympathies to the families and friends of Mr. Robert J. Zavagno Sr., the founder of Cleveland Marble and Mosaic Company and Mr. Daniel Zavarella, father of Brothers Nick and Chuck Zavarella, and grandfather of Brothers Dan and Nick Zavarella Jr., who also recently passed away.
