The Family Picnic was Sunday, July 12 at Swings-n-Things in Olmsted Falls. There was a very good turnout of nearly 200 people on a sunny and pleasant summer day. It was nice to see our members of all ages and their families enjoying themselves. Thanks to all those who attended. A special thanks to Brothers Bob Klimkowicz, Sal Filippelli, and Joe Coreno, who helped with this event.

 

The Golf Outing August 1st at Mallard Creek was a sellout. Thanks to Brother Steve Hanlon and Brother Joe Coreno for all their hard work on this annual event.                      

 

THE BRICKLAYERS LOCAL 5 SOFTBALL TEAM  has won the Men’s Sunday League American Division at Brookside Park . They are currently 2-0 in the post season

 

MEMBERSHIP NEWS

 

Congratulations to Brother John J. Kolesar and his wonderful wife Mary who will be celebrating their 60th Wedding Anniversary September 10th. The members and officers of local 5 wish you many more years filled with love, happiness and the best of health.

 

Congratulations are also in order for Brother Joseph E. Presot and Brother Thomas W. Stockard who receive their 50 year pins and life member gold cards this month.  Congratulations also to Brother Joe Collins and Brother Michael L. Diasio who will receive their 40 year awards. Congratulations to Brother William B. Phillips, who will receive his his 25 year pin this month.  The Executive Board and the Members of Local 5 thank all of you for your many years of faithful service and wish you the best.

 

The members and officers of Local 5 were deeply saddened to here of the recent passing away of four of our Life Members. They are Brother Ronald J. Skillicorn, Brother Pasquale Soria, Brother James Takacs, and Brother Archie Stephen who was Local 5 Secretary-Treasurer from 1957 –1985. Our sincere sympathies to all of their families and friends. The officers and members of the local union also extend their condolences to Apprentice and Brother Matt Jankowski on the loss of his father, Donald, a UAW union member.

Archie Reid Stephen

 

Archie Reid Stephen, 94, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away peacefully on July 6, 2009.  Archie was born on May 20, 1915 in Cleveland, Ohio.  He and wife Hazel celebrated 68 wedding anniversaries.  In addition to Hazel, Archie is survived by their two sons (Ron and Terry); five grandchildren; and, six great grandchildren.

 

Archie, followed his father (who was once President, Cleveland Local #5); an uncle; and three of his brothers and became a bricklayer.  His ability as a bricklayer was established by winning the Builders Exchange Craftsmanship Award for his work as a foreman on two of Cleveland’s buildings. 

 

He held numerous union positions in Local #5 including: Chairman Arbitration Board; local and state Apprentice Committee; Secretary-Treasurer Bricklayers Benevolent Association; President Bricklayers State Conference; and, both Ohio and International convention delegate. He was elected Secretary-Treasurer of Local #5 in 1957 and held this position for 28 years until his retirement in 1985.

 

Archie was also very active in his local community serving as Building Commissioner, Councilman, and Safety Director in Parma Hts.

Apprentice applications are still being taken only on Mondays 8:30 – 10 a.m. at the Hall. If you know someone interested in learning the skilled trowel trades, have them call Apprentice Coordinator Anthony McCullough at the OADC training center at 330-463-5501.
