March, 2008

We are having another Northern Ohio winter. One day its 50 degrees and the next its 20 degrees and snowing. Work is pretty slow right now because of the weather. It seems when we have a presidential election year the economy takes a downturn. Lets hope it doesn’t drop out of sight. As I am writing this article, it is what they call Super Tuesday. By tonight we will have a good indication who will be our Presidential candidate in November. Lets keep our fingers crossed on this one.

To our members who do not have a current drug free card. We are receiving word from our contractors that they will not hire anyone that cannot produce a current card. If your card has lapsed, call Dave Wondolowski to make arrangements to be tested. As workers comp costs soar more and more, contractors will want a complete compliance to reduce their insurance costs.

Here are some things I have noticed over the years about members of Unions. They don’t come to the meetings. But if they do come, they come late. They generally never accept an offer or committee appointment, as it is easier to criticize than to do things. They get sore if they are not appointed to a committee; but if they are they generally don’t attend meetings. When asked for opinions by the Chairmen about some matter on the floor, they have nothing to say. But after the meeting they seem to have all the answers on how things ought to be done. They hardly ever try to recruit new members; they let the Union do it. They do nothing more than absolutely necessary, but let other members roll up their sleeves and help with whatever needs to get done. They complain that a clique runs the Union. When dues are due, they postpone payment. When they get a letter from the IU they get sore that they have been dropped. They never express how the Union can help you or other members. Then when they do not get the help they didn’t ask for, they quit. They agree with everything said at a meeting, but disagree later on the job.
