The North Shore AFL-CIO Labor Parade and Picnic is scheduled for Saturday, September 3rd in Parma Heights. Show up and park at Greenbrier Commons or Pearl Road Elementary School at 8a.m. to ride the one-way shuttle to the start up area of Snow and Clearview. Step off time is 10a.m. Director Ken Kudela will be driving the O.A.D.C. bus in the parade.   Immediately following the parade, get your free lunch tickets from Sal, Joe, or Paul and join us in the Local 5 tent  for a barbeque with burgers, hot dogs, sausage sandwiches, chips, pop and beer. This is a fun event to honor our working families and it is really special to see the smiles on the faces of the children who are always excited and proud to march down city streets with marching bands playing and people waving at them.We hope to see you there!


The Cleveland Building Trades Softball Tournament opens Thursday September 1st, at 6:00 p.m. Games will also be played Friday, September 2nd, starting at 6:00 p.m. The championship games will be played Saturday September 3rd, morning and early afternoon. All games will be played at James Day Park, 11828 W. Pleasant Valley Road, Parma. The Bricklayers are playing in Division II, which they won in 2009. Good luck team!

In case you didn’t see last month’s Citizen, Sisters and Brothers, Brother Sam Shelly and his wife Colleen are in need of our help. Colleen has been diagnosed with cancer and has undergone three major surgeries. Their medical bills are overwhelming. A dinner/dance party is being hosted by Sam and Colleen?s family to raise money to help pay their medical bills. Your $50 ticket includes a buffet dinner featuring Top Round Sliced w/Au Jus, Chicken Marsala, Parsley Buttered Redskins, Green Beans Almandine, Pasta Marina, coffee & mini pastries, beer, pop and wash. A 50/50 dinner raffle ticket is also available for $75.00. This is a B.Y.O.B. event. There will be side board 50/50 raffles and great prizes for auction. Some of the prizes are as follows: Peek N’ Peak Ski Package with one night lodging at the Peak, Lakefront Lines Casino Windsor Package for four, two Night on the Town Theater Package Tickets at Playhouse Square to see “La Cage Aux Folles” starring George Hamilton (stay over night the Wyndham Hotel included),  Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies Spring of 2012 (balcony tickets), Lunch Cruise Aboard the Nautica Queen, Moon Rock Bowling Outing at Fairview Lanes, Complete Auto Detail and Oil Change at Elyria Hyundai. Gift baskets from Starbucks, Merle Norman Cosmetics, Honey Baked Ham, a movie basket, and a Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville Basket. A bracelet donated by Avalon Jewelers for silent auction, and an office chair donated by Modern Office Products. Gift certificates to Hot Locks Salon, Mitchell’s Ice Cream, Value City Furniture, Outback Steak House, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Danny Boy’s Pizza in Rocky River, Bay Lanes Bowling, Shinto’s Japanese Steak House, Don’s Lighthouse, Bella Capelli Sancuario Salon, Buckeye Lanes North Olmsted, and a Grilling Cooking set donated by Levin Furniture. More details to follow. Best wishes for a speedy return to good health from the Local 5 members and Executive Board to Brother Mike Lauber, who is recovering from surgery.
 
Congratulations to Brother Robert Snyderburn for receiving his 50 year Gold Card Award this month. Congratulations are also in order for Thomas A. Chappelle who will be receiving his 40 year award and for David K. Lewis, who will receive his 25 year pin.  The officers and members of Local 5 thank all of you for your many years of service and dedication to our union and our craft. We wish you the very best of health and happiness.
 
Happy anniversary wishes to Brother John Kolesar and his wife Mary who will celebrate their 62nd year of marriage on September 10th. Congratulations to both of you from the officers and members of Local 5.
